The Clever Frog
Deep inside a forest, there was a quiet little pond. Many fish, frogs, and crabs lived there happily. They played together and had no worries.
In that pond lived two smart and beautiful fish named Sahasrabuddhi and Shatabuddhi. They were bigger than the others and proud of their cleverness and looks.
There was also a frog named Ekkabuddhi who lived with his wife. The fish and the frog were good friends, and all the animals lived in peace.
One evening, two fishermen were walking through the forest after a long day of fishing. They came across the pond and saw the fish and frogs jumping and playing in the water.
“Look at all these fish and frogs!” said one fisherman.
“Yes, and they’re so easy to catch here,” said the other.
“The pond doesn’t seem too deep. We should come back tomorrow with our nets.”
“It’s getting late,” said one. “Let’s go home for now and return in the morning.”
Ekkabuddhi heard what the fishermen said and became worried. He told the others, “Did you hear them? We must leave this pond before it’s too late.”
But Sahasrabuddhi laughed. “They just said it. They might not even come back.”
“And even if they do,” said Shatabuddhi, “I know hundreds of ways to escape.”
“I know a thousand!” added Sahasrabuddhi proudly.
“We’re not going anywhere,” they all agreed.
But Ekkabuddhi shook his head. “I know only one way—to leave before the danger comes.”
So Ekkabuddhi and his wife quietly left the pond and found a new, safe place to live. The others laughed at him as he went.
The next morning, the fishermen returned. They threw their big nets into the pond.
“Help!” cried Sahasrabuddhi. “I can’t escape this net!”
“Neither can I!” shouted Shatabuddhi. “It’s too strong!”
“We should have listened to Ekkabuddhi!” cried another fish.
But it was too late. The fishermen caught all the fish, frogs, and crabs and took them away in a big basket.
From behind a rock, Ekkabuddhi and his wife watched silently.
“If we hadn’t left in time,” Ekkabuddhi said to his wife, “we would be in that basket too.”
