The Kind Man and the Frightened Cat
One quiet afternoon, an elderly man was walking through the woods when he heard soft cries coming from a nearby bush. Curious, he stepped closer and found a small cat trapped in a narrow ditch. The frightened creature was struggling to climb out.
Moved with compassion, the man reached down to help. But as he tried to lift the cat, it scratched his hand out of fear. The man quickly pulled back in pain. Still, he didn’t give up. He reached down again, gently and patiently, trying to help.
A passerby who had been watching called out, “Why do you keep trying? Can’t you see the cat doesn’t want your help? Just leave it!”
But the old man ignored the comment and kept trying—calmly, quietly. After a few more attempts, he finally managed to rescue the cat. It ran off into the trees, safe at last.
The man turned to the observer and said with a smile, “That cat scratched me because it was afraid. But I helped it because I care. Its nature is to scratch. My nature is to be kind.”
Moral: Be true to your values, even when others don’t reflect them. Let your actions come from who you are—not from how others behave.
