Making a Difference
Tom went for a walk on the beach every day. One day, he noticed a man bending down, picking something up, and gently tossing it into the sea.
Curious, Tom walked closer. As he approached, he saw that the man was picking up starfish that had washed ashore and throwing them back into the water.
Tom greeted him and asked, “Good evening! What are you doing?”
The man smiled and replied, “These starfish were washed up by the tide. If they stay on the shore, they’ll die from lack of oxygen. I’m helping them get back to the ocean.”
Tom nodded. “I see… but there are thousands of starfish on this beach. You can't possibly save them all. And this probably happens on hundreds of other beaches too. How can this really make a difference?”
The man smiled again. He bent down, picked up another starfish, tossed it into the ocean, and said, “It made a difference to that one.”
Moral of the Story:
We may not be able to change the entire world, but we can make a difference—one step, one action, one person at a time.
Many times, we feel overwhelmed by the size of a problem, and that keeps us from even trying. But if we break things down into small steps—just like one starfish at a time—we can start to create real, meaningful change.
